Police evacuated the bridge, which was the scene of a deadly terror attack in March, and placed tape across each side at around 6pm.

Witnesses said a suspect vehicle parked on the bridge was investigated by officers.

They later determined the car was not suspicious and the bridge has been re-opened.

Twitter users described being “cleared” from the bridge by police during rush hour this evening.

One Twitter user said: “Police have just cleared Westminster bridge. No cars. No pedestrians. Nothing.”

Another said: “???????? Been told to get off Westminster Bridge??”

A third said: “Some s**t going down on Westminster bridge”.

Westminster underground station remained open during the incident.

Nearby roads, however, experienced heavy traffic while the bridge remained closed.
