The executive body, which is part of the Department of Health, warned in letters to hospitals their major trauma centres could be overrun as they fear another terror attack following Monday night’s attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.
A total of 22 people died, including children as young as eight-years-old, and 120 were injured.
Patients were sent to eight hospitals across Manchester, with some centres struggling to cope with the high numbers of severe injuries.
The warning from NHS England comes two days after Theresa May raised the UK’s terror threat level to “critical”, which means an attack is imminent.
England has 27 major trauma centres which are hubs providing specialised trauma care and rehabilitation for injures which are life-changing and could result in death or serious disability.
Out of the total 27, 11 treat both adults and children, another 11 only treat adults and five only treat children.
An NHS England spokesperson said: “Since JTAC has announced the threat level has changed from severe to critical, this triggers longstanding tried and tested NHS protocols reflected in this letter which reminds NHS organisations of the precautionary measures they need to take ensure care is in place should it be needed.”
