Police stormed to to the scene shortly after it was announced that the Changing of the Guard ceremony has been cancelled.

Dramatic images show the man sprawled across the ground, dressed in a blue hooded jumper and a khaki jacket, as officers searched him.

The incident comes less than 48 hours after ISIS suicide bomber Salman Abedi struck Manchester Arena with a bomb during an Ariana Grande concert, killing 22 people and injuring more than 60 others.

Soldiers have been deployed to guard Buckingham Palace, Downing Street and key sites with the Houses of Parliament on lockdown and the Ministry of Defence cancelling Buckingham Palace’s Changing of the Guard allowing armed police to be moved elsewhere.

An eyewitness said he saw a man surrounded by officers and handcuffed as he sat on the ground in The Mall at around 10.40am on Wednesday.

A police van, with flashing lights, rushed to the scene and drove him away.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said the incident is not believed to be terror-related.

The Queen and her husband Phillip this morning left the Palace to attend St Paul’s Cathedral in London for a service to mark the Centenary of the Order of the British Empire.
