A Mississippi legislator has said that people who take down Confederate statues should be ‘lynched’ in a Facebook post decrying the ‘heinous and horrific destruction’ of American history.
State representative Karl Oliver hit out at the leadership of Louisiana after New Orleans removed four monuments to figures from that era.
The last of the statues – showing General Robert E Lee facing defiantly north with his arms crossed – was lifted by a crane from its pedestal late on Friday.
As air was seen between Lee’s statue and the pedestal below it, a cheer went out from the crowd who recorded the moment with their phones.
But yesterday, Republican Oliver wrote on Facebook: ‘The destruction of these monuments, erected in the loving memory of our family and fellow Southern Americans, is both heinous and horrific.
‘If the, and I use this term extremely loosely, ‘leadership’ of Louisiana wishes to, in a Nazi-ish fashion, burn books or destroy historical monuments of OUR HISTORY, they should be LYNCHED!
‘Let it be known, I will do all in my power to prevent this from happening in our State.’
MailOnline has attempted to contact Oliver at his office and at the funeral home he runs but he was not available for comment.
