As tensions escalate on the Korean peninsula, Washington insists it will work with the UN, Japan, China and South Korea to reach a solution.
But US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis refused to rule out a military solution.
North Korea launched its latest missile test on Saturday in defiance of international sanctions as the UN Security Council demanded Pyongyang halt all ballistic missile tests.
Talks continue to gather pace amid fears Kim Jong-un will carry out a sixth nuclear tests imminently.
North Korea has vowed to develop a missile mounted with a nuclear warhead that can strike the mainland United States, saying the programme is necessary to counter US aggression.
Speaking from the Pentagon, Mr Mattis said Washington is working internationally to find a diplomatic solution.
Mr Mattis said: “We are going to continue to work the issue. If this goes to a military solution, it’s going to be tragic on an unbelievable scale.
“So our effort is to work with the UN, work with China, work with Japan, work with South Korea to try to find a way out of this situation.”
It comes as North Korea’s deputy UN envoy said the US needs to roll back its “hostile policy” toward Pyongyang before talks could take place between the pair.
