Siegfried Hecker, an expert on North Korea’s military programme, believes it is vital for Donald Trump and the South Korean president Moon Jae-in to agree on a united policy to help tackle Kim Jong-un’s aggression.
Mr Hecker said: “North Korea has ample technical reason to test again as it moves toward developing a credible nuclear-tipped Inter Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). The test site appears to be ready.
“I believe the only thing that inhibits them from testing is the political fallout they would face, particularly from China and the new South Korean administration.”
It comes after the United Nation’s Security Council demanded that Pyongyang halts all nuclear and ballistic missile tests and condemned Sunday’s test-launch.
Mr Hecker is a Stanford University professor who saw the North Korean uranium enrichment facility during a visit in 2010. Reports estimate that North Korea have enough plutonium and enriched uranium for 20 to 25 nuclear weapons.
The expert continued: “All estimates are to a large extent based on the observations my Stanford colleagues and I made during my last visit to Yongbyon in November 2010. To my knowledge, no outsiders have been in their nuclear complex since.
