President Donald Trump sent a message to ex-FBI director James Comey and his detractors as he told Liberty University graduates that ‘nothing is more pathetic than being a critic’ during his first commencement address as the commander-in-chief of the United States.
For his first commencement address, Trump picked Liberty University, the Christian school whose president, Jerry Falwell Jr, was among Trump’s earliest and most vocal supporters.
Trump was seated onstage next to Falwell, who helped Trump win an overwhelming 80 per cent of the white evangelical vote in the 2016 presidential election.
At the beginning of the commencement, Falwell welcomed Trump, who is the second sitting president since former president George H. W. Bush to speak at the university.
‘I’m proud to say today that the President of the United States decided to deliver his first commencement address, not at Notre Dame but at Liberty University,’ Falwell said.
Trump was met with a standing ovation by school administrators, faculty, staff and students, as he was welcomed to the stage.
‘There’s no place in the world I’d rather be to give my first commencement speech as president than Liberty University,’ Trump said as he began his speech to the more than 18,000 graduates. ‘I accepted this invitation a long time ago.’
