Early frontrunners are starting to emerge in the search for a new FBI Director following the dismissal of James Comey.

Donald Trump’s sensational decision to fire the embattled head of the bureau sent shockwaves through Washington and even surprised some of the commander-in-chief’s closest allies.

Now the search is on to find his replacement.

On Wednesday morning, Trump tweeted: ‘James Comey will be replaced by someone who will do a far better job, bringing back the spirit and prestige of the FBI.’

The first FBI Director was J. Edgar Hoover. He served for 48 years before his death in 1972.

Since 1976, directors have been limited to a 10-year term. They are nominated by the President and have to be confirmed by the Senate.

Following Comey’s dismissal, Andrew G. McCabe was made Acting FBI director. He is one of the candidates in the running, but a number of other names have been linked with the newly-vacant post, including:

The former New York mayor would be an attractive choice for Trump, as Giuliani was among his most vocal supporters during the presidential race and has a background in law enforcement.

However this loyalty would make his appointment unlikely, CNN reports, as he would be extremely unlikely to get the backing of the Senate.

He has been outspoken in his opposition to Hillary Clinton.
