With Kim Jong-un threatening to reduce his enemies to “debris”, Donald Trump vowing to launch a pre-emptive strike if necessary and political instability in Seoul, Chinese military pressure is merely the latest ingredient added to an explosive mix.
Beijing confirmed today live-fire drills had been held in the northeastern Bohai Sea, close to the Korean peninsula.
The country’s defence ministry said the tests of new missiles and weapons were carried out by the People’s Liberation Army’s Rocket Force “in recent days” and were designed to improve reaction times to national security threats.
It comes amid worsening relations between America and China, who are furious at the deployment of the US anti-missile defence system THAAD in South Korea last month.
Adding confusion to the matter are similarly deteriorating relations between China and North Korea, historically an ally of the state.
With Kim Jong-un continuing to sabre-rattle, a move which is increasing instability in the region, Beijing is quickly losing patience with the erratic dictator.
Last month China warned North Korea it would introduce sanctions if the country held a sixth controversial nuclear test.
