The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) claims US spies infiltrated the country to commit “state-sponsored terrorism.”
It also states they bribed a North Korean citizen with $40,000 (£32,000) to carry out the killing.
Ri Byong Ho, North Korea’s head of intelligence, said the suspect was a “very important person” and that “there have been more than 80 planned terrorist attacks” that have been foiled.
No proof has been provided to back up the regime’s claims.
Video provided by KCNA showed Pyongyang residents reacting to the news.
One said: “We cannot bear this anymore. We have to wipe out those villians involved in the recent hideous terrorist plot.”
The state news agency warned: “We will ferret out and mercilessly destroy to the last one of the terrorists of the US CIA.
“Korean-style anti-terrorist attacks will be commenced from this moment to sweep away the intelligence and plot-breeding organisations of the US imperialists and the puppet clique.
“Criminals going hell-bent to realise such a pipe dream cannot survive on this land even a moment.”
The alleged assassination plot reflects theories surrounding the death of Kim’s brother, Kim Jong-nam.
