The Islamic Republic fired off the advanced weapon in the Straight of Hormuz – described by US officials as a key shipping route and the world’s most “strategically important choke points”.
Military officials said that while the test did not violate international law, they consider it another serious war provocation.
According to Fox News, the missile tested has a range of more than nine kilometres and can travel at speeds of 400km per hour.
It comes as tensions between Iran and the United States have reached boiling point.
Fears have been raised that Iran and fellow nuclear threat North Korea could forge an anti-US military alliance.
Last week, Pentagon sources reportedly confirmed an Iranian Yono-class submarine attempted a missile launch last week that failed.
The sub is believed to have been based on a North Korean design – suggesting military coordination between the two pariah states.
