Pernille Vermund, the leader of Nye Borgerlige or ‘The New Right’ party in Denmark, said it would not surprise her if Brussels scuppered a future deal to punish the UK for leaving the Union.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Ms Vermund said: “I hope they don’t, but the way they are acting in the EU, it wouldn’t surprise me [if they punished the UK].”
The right-wing party leader added the EU’s treatment of Britain after it voted to leave in the June referendum was reason enough itself for others to flee the union.
Ms Vermund said: “For me it is very obvious that if one becomes a member of something where you’ll be punished for leaving the fold, then you should just stay clear.
“For me the EU is almost using mafia-like methods.”
The Danish politician also reprimanded the bloc for risking a future relationship with the UK with its hard-line approach.
Ms Vermund said: “I think it is deeply unreasonable to demand Britain pays for something they are not participating in.”
The eurosceptic politician also suggested a bad deal would backfire because the European Union needs the UK to emerge from Brexit as a strong and prosperous nation.
