Ambassador Choe Il said he did not know when North Korea’s sixth nuclear test will be, but there will be one at the time and place of Kim Jong-un’s choosing.

Relations between the international community and North Korea have taken a serious dip over the past few months, with the North defying UN warnings and claiming sanctions have no legal grounds.

In his first interview as North Korea’s ambassador to the UK, Mr Choe told Sky News: “In regards to the sixth nuclear test, I do not know the scheduled time for it, as I am here in the UK, not in my home country.

“However, I can say that the nuclear test will be conducted at the place and time as decided by our supreme leader, Kim Jong-Un.”

The ambassador claimed North Korea is not concerned about military threats from the United States because his nation is “fully ready to respond”.

Donald Trump last month sent the USS Carl Vinson carrier-led strike group to the Korea peninsula where the South Korean and Japanese navy have been carrying out exercises.

Mr Trump has warned against North Korea carrying out a sixth nuclear test and the United States is believed to be getting ready to impose new sanctions if it does happen.

Mr Choe added: “If we were afraid of it, we probably would not have started conducting nuclear tests or launching ballistic missiles.

“We are developing our nuclear strength to respond to that kind of attack by the US.
