HMS Somerset tracked down Vladimir Putin’s vessel Krasnodar as it moved off the coast of Britain.
The Type 23 frigate followed the Kilo-class sub over the weekend through the English Channel and the Dover Strait.
Commander Tim Berry of the HMS Somerset said the mission was launched to “protect our island nation”.
Krasnodar is a diesel-electric vessel designed to be nearly completely silent.
Kilo-class submarines are designed to combat other warships and submarines with torpedoes and cruise missiles.
Last week, Russia unveiled one of its next generation submarines – the “Super Shark”.
Commander Berry said: “Policing the sea both in home waters and further afield is core business for the Royal Navy.
“Escorting foreign warships, in this case a Russian submarine, through UK waters is just part of our ongoing effort to protect our island nation.”
Kremlin vessels are regularly escorted through waters off Britain as Putin projects the power of Russia – with a major stir last year as Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier lurched past Dover.
Last week, Britian launched HMS Audacious – one of the Royal Navy’s new attack submarines.
