NIGEL Farage has urged Ireland to “remember who its real friends are” and to join Britain in leaving the European Union (EU).

In a fiery editorial in the Irish Times newspaper the former Ukip leader called on the Republic to “cut free” of the bloc.

Making only a brief reference to the Troubles, which saw more than 3,500 people killed during a bitter conflict in the north of the island, he said close links between the Republic and the UK made Irexit an obvious choice.

Speaking as results confirmed Ukip’s council seats were decimated from 109 to one in the local elections, Nigel Farage said Irexit was “beyond discussion”.

He wrote: “It is beyond doubt that the relations between Ireland and Great Britain are in the best shape they have been for over a century.

“So it is clearly in the interests of the Irish and British public that this free trade, travel and close relations continue and grow into the future.”

Mr Farage said this was only possible if the Republic joined Britain outside the EU.
