China has said it wants to stay ‘good neighbours’ with North Korea, after the isolated country’s state media published a rare criticism of its closest ally yesterday.
On Wednesday, KCNA news agency said calls in Chinese newspapers for tougher sanctions over Pyongyang’s nuclear program were straining relations with Beijing.
This led Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang to today insist China had been ‘consistent and clear’ in its desire to remain an ally of the hermit state.
The USA has urged China, North Korea’s only major ally, to do more to rein its nuclear programmes, with President Trump warning the ‘era of strategic patience’ is over.
KCNA referred to recent commentaries in China’s People’s Daily and Global Times newspapers which had featured a ‘string of absurd and reckless remarks’.
It continued: ‘China had better ponder over the grave consequences to be entailed by its reckless act of chopping down the pillar of the DPRK-China relations.’
