Global elites are pleading with the German Chancellor to end the populist “attack” on free trade, as well as to secure more support on protecting the environment, ahead of the Hamburg meet.
These economists argue Donald Trump’s election and the ongoing Brexit negotiations indicate a worldwide slide towards isolationism – something which would devastate global free trade.
They say Mr Trump in particular must be brought under control before the all-important summit on July 7 and 8, or face economic and environmental chaos.
B-20, a business group made up of companies and experts from the G20 states, are this week meeting with Angela Merkel for crisis talks in preparation for the summit.
Emma Marcegaglia, chair of the group’s Trade and Investments board, said bluntly: “We need to note that globalisation is increasingly under attack.”
She said the situation in America, the UK and Russia all pointed towards an assault on free trade and internationalism.
Another spokesperson for the group said: “Global trade and investment opportunities should be strengthened.
“One thing is certain: protectionism and a mercantilist policy can in no case be a solution that results in prosperity for more people.”
