An infamous airport tarmac meeting between former President Bill Clinton and then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch last summer convinced FBI director James Comey that he needed to seize full control of the announcement regarding Hillary Clinton’s emails.
The meeting, which drew howls of protest from Donald Trump as well as criticism from watchdog groups and lawmakers when it was revealed, persuaded Comey that he, rather the the AG or another Justice official, should reveal to the nation the results of a prolonged investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails.
‘A number of things had gone on – some of which I can’t talk about yet,’ Comey said ‘that made me worry that the department leadership could not credibly complete the investigation and decline prosecution without grievous damage to the American people’s confidence in the justice system.’
‘And the capper was – and I’m not picking on the [former] attorney general, Loretta Lynch, who I like very much – but her meeting with President Clinton on that airplane was the capper for me,’ Comey said.
