US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has claimed that “business as usual is not an option” and warned of the “catastrophic effects” of a nuclear strike.

Addressing the United Nations, he added that “all options must remain on the table” and that it is “time to retake control”, urging the security council to “act before North Korea does”.

“With each successive detonation and missile test North Korea pushes northeast Asia and the world closer to instability and broader conflict,” he told the 15-member council.

“The threat of a North Korean attack on Seoul or Tokyo is real.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Theresa May said the secretive state’s missile tests a threat to global peace.

“In the face of this belligerence, we stand steadfast in our condemnation of such destabilising activity,” she said.

“We will continue to work with our international partners to maintain pressure on North Korea and counter the security threat posed by its illegal pursuit of nuclear weapons, and work towards a peaceful resolution.”

And Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson accused North Korea of issuing “blood-curdling threats” during the escalating crisis.
