This is the second highest of the three alert stages used by the Chinese Army, known as the People’s Liberation Army.

Troops are only put on high alert when a direct military threat has reached a certain level, according to Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun.

Sources told the publication that the alert came into effect around the middle of April, and an additional 100,000 troops have been moved to China’s border with North Korea.

China has been an ally of the hermit state in recent years, but Kim Jong-un’s increasing nuclear threats has prompted Beijing to introduce sanctions.

An editorial in China’s state-run media outlet, the Global Times, claims Beijing officials would consider a military response to a US strike against North Korean nuclear facilities to be “unnecessary”.

It added: “The game of chicken between Washington and Pyongyang has come to a breaking point.

“It is more likely than ever that the situation will cross the point of no return. All stakeholders will bear the consequences, with Pyongyang sure to suffer the greatest losses.”
