Communist-endorsed Mr Melenchon refused to back centrist Emmanuel Macron, who is favourite to win the presidency, after he lost in the first round of the French election.

Polls released by the Interior Minister handed Marine Le Pen victory in the first round with 23.6 per cent of the vote compared to Mr Macron’s 22.7 per cent, but they later changed to show Mr Macron is slightly in front.

In a speech after losing in the first round of the French election, Mr Melenchon blasted the final two candidates for wanting to “extend current institutions as they are”.

He said: “The mediacrats, the oligarchs will be jubilated. Nothing is finer for them than a second round between two candidates who approve and want to extend the current institutions as they are.

“Who do not express any awareness of the ecological challenges on the perils of the threatened civilisation and they both tend to attack the social rights that have been acquired by our citizens.

“Whatever the case, when the official results will be known we will respect them, we will abide by them.”

Addressing his followers, Mr Melenchon said the country was “facing a new world” and “liberty and equality” must prevail.

“I call on you to stay united, to stay on the march and to be on the go because the challenges facing us and which we have designated without hiding any of them and hiding any of the difficulties that they pose to be solved,” he said.
