Civilian authority over the military is a hallmaark principle over American government. In this role, the President reigns as the “Commander-in-Chief”, not the other way around. This principle has ensured the preservation of our Republic for well over two centuries.

Trump Expresses Unwavering Support for the Military

Unlike Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, President Trump is leaving the battlefield strategy to the generals. There are a multitude of ways to interpret Trump’s recent expression of his handling of Presidential authority in lieu of military decisions.

If the President is stating that the military is in charge of all/most millitary decisions, I have a grave concern with that position. If this were to be the case, the United States is risking of falling into the trap of becoming a military dictatorship. I don’t believe, and I certainly do not hope that this is President Trump’s intention, but you know what they say about the road to hell being paved with good intentions.

If Trump is saying to his generals and admirals that I won’t do to your command what Truman did to MacArthur, I concur. However, no general should be making political decisions as it relates to war as civilian authority over all war-making and war-policy decisions must be adhered to.

One has to remember that much of military is controlled by the Pentagon. Their ties to the military industrial complex is of concern if they are in charge of policy making decisions. Further, with the emergence of the awareness of how omnipresent the Deep State is, should give pause to allow the military to assume control over any millitary decision beyond battlefield decisions.

Here is a summary of the pitfallls of an approach where civilian authority over is compromised.
