Mr Pence met with Shinzo Abe and promised “iron clad” alliance between the two countries as well as agreeing China needs to take a greater role in bringing stability to the divided region.

The two confirmed during a working lunch that China’s role was important in dealing with North Korea, and they needed to work on China to take on a bigger role, Japanese Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Koichi Hagiuda told reporters.

Donald Trump has previously said if China will not step up to the mark then he will have to deal with the threat posed by North Korea.

China has long supported the North, but it has had a tumultuous relationship over the years and there is a feeling that, in the face of strong international pressure, President Xi Jinping may finally seek to depose the Kim regime.

It comes just days after Mr Pence said: “The era of strategic patience is over and while all options are on the table, President Trump is determined to work closely with Japan, with South Korea, with all our allies in the region and with China to achieve a peaceable resolution and the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

“We appreciate the challenging time in which the people of Japan live with increasing provocation across the Sea of Japan. We are with you 100 percent.”
