NORTH Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un has a lot of enemies but one of the highest on his hit list is a young woman living in New York.

Yeonmi Park is 23 years old but the North Korean defector has made it her mission to give her former countrymen and women a voice, no matter the personal cost.

“Yes it is scary because he doesn’t care who he kills – he even killed his own brother, Kim Jong Nam – but the world needs to hear our story,” she says.

In the week that President Trump met China’s president Xi Jinping to discuss North Korea and its everlooming threat as a nuclear powerhouse, Yeonmi is worried that the 24.9 million oppressed and desperate North Koreans – many tortured or starving – are being forgotten amid the wrangling over trade agreements and arms treaties.

Having escaped North Korea in 2007, then under the rule of Kim Jong-il, Yeonmi now lives in America but spends her time travelling around the world speaking out on behalf of those she left behind.

She found her platform at the One Young World 2014 Summit when her speech about the North Korean regime went viral, reaching 80 million views on YouTube and leading to the publication of her memoir, In Order To Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey To Freedom.
