THE US missile strikes on a Syrian air base were a narrow “one step away” from clashing with the Russian military, according to the country’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Mr Medvedev said that the strikes were illegal and “one step away from military clashes with Russia”.

Satellite images have revealed that the Shayrat air base that was struck is the home to Russian military helicopters and its special forces.

The Kremlin has armed forces there in a bid to help the Syrian government fight Islamic State.

A Washington spokesman Captain Jeff Davis has said the strikes did avoid the base that is home to the Russians.

American officials did warn Russian forces ahead of the strikes, which aimed at punishing the Syrian government for a chemical weapons attack.

The barbaric, poisonous gas attack, allegedly ordered by President Bashar-al- Assad, killed at least 70 people.

Mr Medvedev said: “The Trump administration proved that it will fiercely fight the legitimate Syrian government, in a tough contradiction with international law and without UN approval.”

He added that Trump had completely ruined the relationship between the two countries, “which is good news for terrorists”.
