Spanish navy corvette the Infanta Cristina sailed close to the Rock until it was intercepted by two ribs from the Royal Navy.

The showdown came after Spain told Britain to “calm down” as tensions over Gibraltar’s place after Brexit rise.

Infanta Cristina brazenly steamed well within British waters within the Rock’s territory earlier today.

Gibraltar’s government revealed the incident on Twitter and branded it an “illegal incursion”.

The confrontation happened just days after top Tory Lord Howard suggested Prime Minster Theresa May may got to war over the Rock.

Mrs May yesterday played down the threat of military conflict after the former Conservative leader compared Gibraltar to the Falklands.

The PM said: “What we’re doing with all European countries in the European Union is sitting down and talking to them.

“We’re going to be talking to them about getting the best possible deal for the UK, and for those countries, Spain included. It’s definitely jaw-jaw.”

The tensions comes after it emerged the EU is accused of plotting to use Gibraltar as a bargaining chip in the Brexit negotiations following the triggering of Article 50.
