According to Italian government sources, Switzerland have begun requesting police records for people arriving in the country from Italy.

Three crossings on the border between the two states has also been closed by the Swiss government, adding fuel to the fire.

Switzerland claim the measure is necessary due t the presence of “dangerous criminal organisations” in Italy.

However Italy say this is an obvious breach of the Schengen Agreement.

Laura Ravetto, chairman of the Italian parliamentary control committee on the Schengen Agreement, said: “The embassy has things to explain.

“Neither the government nor the European Commission have been informed of the Swiss decision. That’s why I called the ambassador in Bern.”

She questioned why Italian citizens hoping to move to neighbouring Switzerland were being forced to jump through more hoops than those from other EU states.
