All stations in the western Russian city have been closed after the blast left a trail of devastation between Sennaya Ploschad station and Tekhnologichesky Institute.

First pictures depict a smoke-filled subway, with crowds walking bewilderingly moments after the shocking attack killed multiple people.

Passengers were immediately evacuated as emergency services swooped on the stations at about 2.30pm local time (12.30pm GMT).

Local media reports children are among those who have died in the attack in Russia’s second largest city.

President Vladimir Putin, who is already in the city to meet the Belarussian leader, confirmed there are dead and injured.

He said the cause is not clear and is in contact wit the heads of the security services.

The Russian President added: “The city authorities, and, if required, the federal authorities, will take all necessary measures to support the families of those killed and those injured.”
