North Korea beefs up its borders as THOUSANDS of defectors flee Kim’s regime

THOUSANDS have fled North Korea under Kim Jong-un, but now the tyrant is cracking down on escapes and beefing up his borders.

Data obtained by Daily Star Online shows that South Korea alone has taken 6,724 refugees from the North since 2012.

Of these, the figures reveal that most were women, with 5,182 female defectors compared to just 1,542 males.

And most made their escape early in Kim’s reign, with recent years showing a marked decline in numbers.

But that’s no surprise, with Human Rights Watch accusing the regjme of making it harder and harder to flee the country.

In its 2016 summary, the organisation described new measures to deter people leaving through China, the main escape route.

Among them were more barbed wire and harsher punishments for those using smuggled Chinese mobiles to call the outside world.

The summary states: “Both North Korea and China have increased patrols and established barriers to crossing the border.
