LONDON is set to become a FORTRESS as security is beefed up in the wake of the bloodbath at Westminster.

Last night Home Secretary Amber Rudd insisted public security is the government’s “top priority” following the sickening attack at the hands of a machete-wielding extremist.

Four people – including the as yet unnamed assailant – were killed and up to 40 were left hurt after terror hit the heart of the capital yesterday.

Islamic State has now claimed responsibility for the barbaric events and the identity of the attacker has been confirmed as 52-year-old Khalid Masood.

The terror nut – today revealed to be BRITISH-born and known to MI5 spooks – mowed down panic-stricken pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in a 4×4 before stabbing PC Keith Palmer to death outside the Houses of Parliament.

He was gunned down by armed cops at the scene of the bloodshed.

But today it has been claimed the scenes of horror could have been PREVENTED if a “weak spot” had been protected.

MPs claim the carriage gates giving way to the Palace of Westminster were “vulnerable” and could have been better secured.
