The US President welcomed Angela Merkel to Washington on Friday in a tense meeting between the leaders.

The German Chancellor and President Donald Trump were asked to shake hands ahead of their press conference, but neither moved during the awkward encounter.

Nigel Farage described the leaders cultural differences as the biggest ever when the pair met.

He said: “If there was to be a clash of cultures between western leaders, this is it.

“Angel Merkel who believes in super-nationalism, Angela Merkel who made this call for as many migrants as possible to cross the mediterranean and come to the European Union.

“The policy which I consider to be perhaps the worst decision, by a European leader in over 70 years.”

The former Ukip leader criticised the German chancellor for wanting military support from America without investing in their own defence.

He added: “Angela Merkel wants American protection through NATO, but she is not prepared to pay for it.

“Two per cent of annual GDP is what NATO members are supposed to pay into the pot.
