Getting back at Trump? Mexico attempts to reclaim land lost to US in 1848 amid wall row

MEXICO is attempting to reclaim territories lost in 1848 as it continue to grapple with Donald Trump over his planned border wall.

Former presidential candidate Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano has claimed it is not too late to take legal action over the Guadalupe-Hidalgo treaties of 1848.

It formally ended the Mexican-American War, but saw the central American country lose half its land to its northern neighbour.

The Rio Grande was the new boundary for Texas, and Mexico gave to the US California, roughly half of New Mexico, most of Arizona, Nevada, Utah and parts of Wyoming and Colorado.

Mr Solórzano said it was not too late, nor too opportunistic to get them back, stressing that: “Correcting injustices does not prescribe.”

Guillermo Hamdan Castro, a Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) member and a lawyer, presented a proposal or Mexico to receive compensation from the US for the “snatched” territories.

Mr Solórzano said the federal government should submit the position to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to annul the treaty.

He said: “I think it’s a step forward that the Mexican government should support.
