The one time leader of the Australian Liberal Party, 59, told the Express.co.uk that Brexit would create more opportunities for Australia and other countries to have “economic co-operation” with the UK.

He said: “I’m a big fan of enhanced co-operation and a strong relationship with Britain. But there will be much more opportunity for economic co-operation between Australia and Britain now that Britain is leaving the European Union.

“Whatever the EU’s strengths were it was essentially an engine that built walls against the rest of the world. And at least as far as Britain was concerned those walls are now coming down.

“That’s going to make it much easier for countries like the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan and India to have a strong inter-relationship and partnership with Britain.”

The London-born politician, who governed the country for two years from September 2013, also said that the UK could learn lessons over the issue of immigration control from Australia’s no-nonsense policy.

He stated: “We have great strengths in Australia and there are certainly lessons that Britain and certainly other countries could learn from Australia’s immigration and border protection policies certainly from the way we have stopped the boats which certainly Europe hasn’t done.
