IRELAND needs to abandon the sinking ship of the European Union before its too late, a prominent author and academic has insisted.

Bruce Arnold, OBE, penned a scathing review of the EU and the effect Brexit will have on Ireland, which will be the UK’s only land border with the bloc.
With Prime Minister Theresa May set to trigger Article 50 in the coming weeks, kick-starting the formal two-year process to leave the bloc, lengthy talks are expected which will include how to police the border.
Trade, the single market, travel restrictions and the rights of EU nationals in the UK are all among the issues to be worked out in the coming years.
Mr Arnold, a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin, warned of the implications Brexit would have for Ireland and the EU, which may have been the catalyst for the breaking up of the EU.
