The risk of a man-made strike happening in Oklahoma is comparable to that of natural earthquakes occurring in California – a state which is largely considered one of the most seismically active in the US.

As many as 3.5million people are at risk of man-induced tremors in Oklahoma, according to the report from the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The seismologists believe the risk of earthquakes has increased due to large volumes of wastewater being injected underground in what is dubbed the “Pipeline Crossroads of the World”.

The report said: “The forecasted chance of damaging ground shaking in central Oklahoma is similar to that of natural earthquakes in high-hazard areas of California.”

Despite the high levels, the forecast for the number of man-induced earthquakes in the southern central US state is actually lower than 2016, but the USGS says that there is still some way to go.
