Spring will become the “new winter” thanks to plunging solar activity keeping temperatures well below average for weeks to come.
Britain is facing a repeat of the 2013 late chill which saw winter weather stretch into April pushing temperatures to -11C (12.2F) in parts.
It comes as parts of Britain wrap up for further wintry showers this week as temperatures hover below average for the time of year.
The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for snow in western England today with up to two inches possible over high ground.
A spokesman said: “Accumulations of one to two centimetres of snow are possible locally at low levels whilst above 200 to 300 metres in excess of three to five centimetres are expected for some.
“Slippery conditions are likely on pavements, cycle paths and untreated roads where snow has fallen overnight.”
