Europe’s largest volcano burst into life on Monday sparking fears for holiday goers that their flights may be disrupted.

Lava came spewing out and ash was flung into the sky, potentially jeopardising flights across the south of Europe.

A spokesperson for Gatwick Airport told Express.co.uk airlines may be forced to “alter their flight paths” but some believe that the ash clouds could reach as far as Bucharest by the end of the week.

A video, which has racked up over 80,000 views in less than 24 hours, uploaded to YouTube by popular channel BPEarthWatch, pointing to a map from weather service AccuWeather, said: “They’re saying as the upper level winds grab the ash from the eruption, they will steer it away from Mt Etna, effecting the weather elsewhere.

“Ash will be swept northeastward across far southwestern Italy, which will see the worst effects.”

It added that the ash will cause “minor air delays, poor air quality and haze”.
