South Korea has warned North Korea has thousands of tonnes of chemicals weapons laying dormant across the country waiting to be used.

The assassination of Kim Jong-un’s brother proves they are willing to use them, according to officials in Seoul.

Foreign minister Yung Byung-se has called on North Korea’s UN membership to be suspended and said the use of chemical weapons to assassinate the half-brother of the communist country’s leader was a ‘wake-up call’.

South Korea called on Tuesday for ‘collective measures’ against North Korea’s rights and privileges.

Yun Byung-se, South Korea’s foreign minister, told the UN-sponsored Conference on Disarmament: ‘North Korea is reported to have not just grams but thousands of tonnes of chemical weapons including VX all over the country.

‘The recent assassination is a wake-up call to all of us to North Korea’s chemical weapons capability and its intent to actually use them.

‘It could take the form of suspension of North Korea’s rights and privileges as a U.N. member.’

He called labelled communist North Korea a ‘serial rule-breaker’.
