The Japanese city was hit the quake on Tuesday, sparking fears of another potentially lethal tsunami as high-rise buildings as far away as the capital Tokyo, some 178 miles south, were seen swaying.

The epicentre struck a depth of 26 miles in the surrounding Pacific ocean off the east-northeast coast, 21 miles from the town of Namie, the US Geological Survey said.

In the immediate aftermath local services were stopped.

Despite concerns the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed there is no threat of a tsunami.

There are no reports of injuries or fatalities.

Tokyo Electric Power, which operates the beleaguered Fukushima nuclear plant, assured no abnormalities had been detected.

The plant has been offline since a whopping magnitude nine earthquake struck off the eastern coast, triggering a killer tsunami.
