Backfiring migrant policies have led to a rocky year for the German Chancellor who was heavily criticised for her “open-door” approach to those fleeing war in Syria.
Hundreds-of-thousands of migrants answered her call and the mass migration quickly divided the nation.
Mrs Merkel backed down on her stance, taking a tougher line just months ahead of Germany’s general election.
Bans on Islamic dress and a clamp down on migration have formed the backbone of a new approach by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
She has since vowed not to allow a repetition of last year’s migrant influx, when nearly 900,000 migrants poured into Germany, and drew cheers when she said the Muslim full-face veil was not compatible with German culture.
Merkel has now been named the third biggest danger to the world – behind Donald Trump and China.
