The US and Japan have successfully carried out the first test of a defense system designed to shoot down ballistic missiles.

The US Missile Defense Agency revealed the USS John Paul Jones was able to track, locate and ultimately destroy a missile by using its onboard Aegis Missile Defense System and a Standard Missile-3 Block IIA interceptor.

The test took place off Kauai in Hawaii on Friday about 10:30pm, and saw the defense missile hit its target in space, officials said.
