Alain Bauer, a professor of criminology at the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (Cnam) in Paris, told the French daily Le Figaro people should be put in quarantine if at risk of becoming jihadists in order to “save hundreds of innocent people”.
He said: “At first, attacks carried out by the Islamic State (ISIS) were incredibly sophisticated. They would set off bombs and fire Kalashnikov-type assault rifles at panicked crowds.
“But they are scaling back and going back to basics: truck assaults, knife attacks, booby-trapped cars and whatnot.
“Their entire modus operandi has changed and the threat is more widespread than ever as a result.”
Mr Bauer was speaking just a day before the Louvre went into lockdown after a man ran into the museum site with a knife.
He was shot by a soldier and arrested.
Mr Bauer said: “We are being sucked into a spiral of fear, but we must resist and fight back. Because if we don’t, terrorists will thrive off that fear.”
