A brave firefighter who worked at Ground Zero following the 9/11 terrorist attack has become the 124th officer to die after breathing in toxic air.

Brian J Masterson, 61, originally from Lissavaddy, Co Longford, Ireland, was working with the New York City Fire Department on the day of the attack.

He was quickly on the scene after the two planes crashed into the Twin Towers in Manhattan in 2001.

The father-of-three, who was a keen marathon runner, died earlier this week after battling against esophageal cancer.

His condition was linked to him being exposed to the dust and toxic air while working at the scene for months after the attack.

Mr Masterson’s funeral was held yesterday at his adoptive home of Walden in New York – 68 miles north of Manhattan.

He was one of many first responders who have since been diagnosed with cancer as a direct result of working at the site.

And the day before he passed away, fellow New York City firefighter Kevin Rooney died aged 38 after working on 9/11.
