Donald Trump joked Wednesday night that the ‘Never Trump’ brigade of dissenting Republicans who tried to sabotage his path to the White House have officially been marginalized and are now ‘on a respirator.’
That laugh line, and a dozen others, were part of an off-the-cuff speech the president-elect delivered during a Washington, D.C. dinner honoring Vice President-elect Mike Pence.
‘Any Never Trumpers in this room?’ he asked, as chuckles reverberated among 500 attendees.
‘No. … These people were angry. They didn’t even know me. I never met them.’
‘They’re really right now on a respirator,’ Trump jabbed, according to a recording obtained by the newly minted Axios news outlet.
‘And we actually do have some Never Trumpers that are fantastic people. They just didn’t understand me.’
‘They’re pretty much gone’ now, he said.
Trump, The New York Times reported, credited Pence for helping the GOP establishment warm to him toward the end of a tumultuous campaign that saw infighting graduate to back-stabbing.
‘They all liked Mike,’ he declared. ‘They were a little bit – you know – a little concerned with me.’
‘I chose Mike, and we went out on the trail, and I’ll tell you: From Day 1, we started hitting it,’ Trump recalled.
‘We had our little ups and downs. You might have known there were some little canyons there on occasion. … We don’t give up, do we, folks? We never give up.’
