Donald Trump’s new administration called EU officials to find out which countries are heading for exit.

US ambassador to the EU Anthony Gardner has revealed the administration was looking for guidance on the turmoil gripping the establishment in a bid to brief the president elect before going on to launch a blistering attack on former Ukip leader Nigel Farage.

Aides specifically asked for advice on which country would follow Britain out of the crumbling bloc prompting Mr Gardner to call on Angela Merkel to step into save the EU.

Mr Gardner made the astonishing comments today claiming he was told about the discussions by staff at the EU but was not involved in the conversations himself.

Trump is an ardent supporter of Brexit and has completely ruled out any trade deal between Europe and America.

He has developed a strong bond with Ukip’s Nigel Farage who championed Brexit which was voted for in June.

Seemingly upset by the change in US foreign policy Mr Gardner also sparked a diplomatic spat with 52-year-old Mr Farage this afternoon.
