Chinese military planes flew above the Korea Strait near the islands of Tsushima and Kusu.

In response Japan flew six Xian H-6 bombers, which made a U-turn and flew back.

Shaanxi Y-8 and Shaanxi Y-9 transport planes were also spotted in the area, according to reports.

okyo military officials insist there was no violation of Japanese airspace.

The move has been sparked by an ongoing confrontation between Japan and China over a set of small islands northeast of Taiwan – known in Japan as the Senkakus – over which both nations have territorial claims.

Japan last year bought British-made military hardware to prepare for a potential confrontation with China.

Antagonism between China and Japan over a contested island archipelago had the Japanese Defence Ministry chasing an injection of cash to buy a range of new weapons.
