General Valery Gerasimov said that a fleet of ships, lead by the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, will be the first to leave the area.

He said: “In accordance with the decision of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, (President) Vladimir Putin, the Russian Defence Ministry is beginning to reduce its armed forces deployment in Syria.”

Russia’s main commander in the Middle-Eastern country Andrei Kartapolov added: “The tasks set for the aircraft carrier group during its military mission have been fulfilled.”

Mr Kartapolov also said that Russia still had sufficient air capabilities in the country with the use of the S-300 and S-400 systems.

Russia had been increasing its presence in the country since September 2015, especially increasing its firepower on land and off the coast of the Mediterranean usually playing a supporting role to the regime’s forces in the assault on the country’s second city of Aleppo.

Troops loyal to Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad finally ousted rebels from the city last month in their biggest victory in more than five years of fighting, allowing the Kremlin to make a fresh push for a political solution to the conflict.
