ALMOST a quarter of French people will be voting for Front National leader Marine Le Pen in round one of next spring’s presidential elections, a shock Elabe poll shows.

Twenty-three per cent of those polled said that they would back the right-wing chief in the first round the upcoming election, which will be held on April 23.

Conservative candidate François Fillon, who has come under fire after claiming that he was both “a Catholic and a Gaullist,” remains in the lead and is set to win 26 per cent of the vote.

Eighteen per cent of those interviewed said that they would be voting for former economy minister Emmanuel Macron; and 13 per cent said that they would be voting for Manuel Valls, France’s former left-wing prime minister.

Under the French election system, the two candidates who win the most votes in the first round of voting will contest a second and decisive round on May 7; unless one candidate gains an overall majority in the first round vote, a scenario which is deemed highly unlikely.

But Mrs Le Pen will have to watch her back: Mr Macron’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent months and his chances of winning the presidency have never been higher.
