A SPATE of earthquakes in Peru coupled with strong volcanic activity in the South American country has led to fears that devastating seismic activity could be on its way.

In what has been a very shaky start to the year for Peru, the nation suffered a strong 5.2 magnitude earthquake in Tacna, at the very south of the country, on Tuesday morning, which was followed by a 5.8 magnitude tremor in the Loreto region in the north.

Although there were no casualties as a result of the tremors, they follow on from two volcanoes, just 60 miles apart, which burst into life at the end of 2016.

The Sabancaya volcano started spewing ash and smoke some 3,500 metres into the air on Boxing Day, while the nearby Ubinas volcano has been sporadically erupting since April 2014.

It is the first time in the country’s recorded history that two volcanoes have been erupting at the same time.

What makes the situation even more worrying is that Peru is situated on the so called ‘Ring of Fire’ – a series of fragile fault lines that stretches from New Zealand, all around the east coast of Asia, over to Canada and the USA then all the way down to the southern tip of South America.

Just today, a huge 7.0 magnitude quake struck Fiji – on the opposite side of the Ring of Fire – while in recent months the likes of Japan and New Zealand, also on the same fault, have experienced several quakes.
