The British minister for security has warned that the Islamic State seeks to carry out a “mass casualty” attack in Britain using chemical weapons.
“They have no moral objection to using chemical weapons against populations, and if they could, they would in this country,” Ben Wallace said in a recent interview with The Sunday Times. “The casualty figures that could be involved would be everybody’s worst fear.”
According to security officials, Islamic militants possess the ability to produce their own mustard gas and have already begun using them in Iraq and Syria, where troops have reportedly experienced blisters on their skin and badly damaged lungs.
The terror group’s goal, the security minister maintained, is to import these attacks directly into European countries such as Britain.
“While no specific chemical plot has been identified, the ambition of IS or Daesh is definitely mass-casualty attacks,” he added. “They want to harm as many people as possible and terrorize as many people as possible.”
